Sad men made angels of the sun, and of
The moon they made their own attendant ghosts,
Which led them back to angels, after death.

Wallace Stevens (1879–1955), U.S. poet. “Evening Without Angels.”

  1. When you see the potential photo, does the poetry link spring instantly to mind, do you hunt for the caption later, or do you read a poem you like and find a picture to capture it?

  2. I majored in English and American Lit. before I changed to Journalism and English.
I don’t “see” the poems or quotes as I’m lining up the shot. Rather, once the photo is downloaded and I see how the box has captured the light and image, then references and shards of memory cause me to go in search of the quotes, poems or songs that the finished image has stirred.

As for the images themselves, I always have a camera ready. When I see a subject that interests me, I whip the camera into position. This often happens while I’m on the motorcycle traveling at 50 MPH. Often I will turn around, stop the bike and think the photo through before trying to recapture it. But rarely will the poems and quotes come to me at that time. (I’m only good at either chewing gum or walking. Doing both confuses me.)

    Great question! Thank you πŸ™‚

  3. Wow – such powerful words. And the photograph is quite incredible. You have managed to capture a potent mood in it.
Glad to hear you’re the “When you sit, sit. When you eat, eat,” kind of person. I sometimes feel I’m the only one left in a world that worships multitaskers.

  4. The atmosphere you captured is breathtaking.

  5. Is this the same graveyard as the next picture? Love how you’ve captured the light!
