How old the world is! I walk between two eternities…. What is my fleeting existence in comparison with that decaying rock, that valley digging its channel ever deeper, that forest that is tottering and those great masses above my head about to fall? I see the marble of tombs crumbling into dust; and yet I don’t want to die!

Denis Diderot (1713–1784), French philosopher, encyclopedist, dramatist, novelist, art critic.

  1. Beautiful photo, Chessie! Sorry I’ve been AWOL on comments – just got back from 2 wks in Vermont. The photo above looks remarkably similar to the woods we’ve been hiking through. Hope all is well w/ you!

  2. Magnificent. Great use of the trees to create a frame within the picture. The content appears almost juxtaposed; the dead trunk, twigs and leaves… the river… the greenery in the back. Fabulous.

    • Man, be still my heart! I think I love you!(Well, at best I know you've made me smile and feel like a million today!)Thank you, Scribbla 🙂

One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. "Which road do I take?" she asked. "Where do you want to go?" was his response. "I don't know," Alice answered. "Then," said the cat, "it doesn't matter." – Lewis Carroll

  3. Did you ever see New Hampshire’s Old Man of the Mountain before it eroded away a few years ago? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Man_of_the_Mountain.) I LOVED that stupid rock formation, and my husband thought it was the dumbest thing in the world… even a an eternal mountain will one day crumble to dust…

    • NO! But the link you left was exciting! Very good way to show the mountain face… I’d never heard of it before! Thanks for showing it to me, Sad when the things we think of as indestructible one day crumble away.
