The improved American highway system … isolated the American-in-transit. On his speedway … he had no contact with the towns which he by-passed. If he stopped for food or gas, he was served no local fare or local fuel, but had one of Howard Johnson’s nationally branded ice cream flavors, and so many gallons of Exxon. This vast ocean of superhighways was nearly as free of culture as the sea traversed by the Mayflower Pilgrims.

Daniel J. Boorstin (b. 1914), U.S. historian. Reith Lectures, Oct. 1975.

  1. Love this nostalgic gas pump.

  2. LOVE this photo. I’ve always had a soft spot of old gas pumps (no idea why – likely b/c I am an American!)

  3. I remember seeing a few of these when I was a kid. Nice!

  4. I want to like it… but I can’t see a picture. *Whimper.*

    • Wow…I can’t understand that…You know, I’ve been having trouble loading the photo links to WordPress lately. I’ve been complaining about it for about a month. I will be so happy when I can pay for a hosting site to carry my blogs…
I’ll email you a copy of the photo!

  5. Okay, got the picture– awesome as always!
